Google acquire Zetawire, and may add Mobile payment to the next Nexus S

According to the 451group, Google may have acquired Zetawire a torronto-based start-up. The most valuable asset of this start-up is a patent that provides for mobile banking, advertising, identity management, credit card and mobile coupon transaction processing.
These features would allow a consumer to make purchases using their smartphone instead of their credit card.
Google could, via NFC chips, rebuild the complete customer cycle, from the reception of advertising up to the purchase of a product.

U.S. Retailer Group: NFC Could Boost Store-Branded Cards

Near Field Communication could help give retailers a new edge in the “wallet-share war” they have been losing for years to banks and their open-loop payment card brands, according to a new report from the giant National Retail Federation.
The new opportunity for store cards and other lower-cost payment options is among the many observations in a just-released “Mobile Retailing Blueprint” from the federation, a retail trade association with 5,600 members.
The 176-page report, which was drafted by an industry committee formed by the federation’s technology standards arm, covers a range of mobile technologies available to retailers to enable consumers to find stores, download coupons, compare products and handle payment. More >
KDDI, Softbank Mobile and SK Telecom to introduce NFC standard services in Japan and Korea

The three mobile network operators are to move away from the non-NFC mobile contactless technologies they currently support in favour of an NFC standard solution.
Korean mobile network operator SK Telecom and Japanese operators KDDI and Softbank Mobile have signed a memorandum of understanding that will see the three companies working together to switch from their existing non-NFC standard mobile contactless services to an NFC standard approach. More >
HID enters NFC market

HID Global has partnered with Inside Contactless providing software so iCLASS credentials can be emulated on MicroRead NFC chips.
Tam Hulusi, senior vice president of strategic innovation and intellectual property at HID, says NFC technology hasn’t always been a sure thing but now it appears that a number of factors are coalescing to bring NFC to market. “NFC has been up and down the past few years,” he says. “Now everyone understands that NFC has to be supported by smart phones … and smart phones with higher bandwidth can make NFC a reality.” More >
